Audubon Birds of Prey Celebrated 30th anniversary

This month, the Audubon Birds of Prey in Maitland, celebrated their 30th anniversary with an event at UCF. We photographed the event and here are some images from this exciting night.

Here’s a little history about this great organization:

On June 14, 1979, Audubon staff member Doris Mager climbed into an inactive Bald Eagle’s nest in Central Florida. She remained in the nest for six days and five nights to raise awareness of the plight of the Bald Eagle and to raise funds to build the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey. The Center opened on October 19, 1979, in Maitland thanks to a generous donation from the Baldwin Family, in loving memory of Madalyn Baldwin. That first year sixty-six sick, injured and baby raptors were admitted for care.

UPDATE: Images from this night were printed in the Audubon of Florida’s Naturalist Magazine (Winter 09-10 edition).  Here is the link

Photographing the Governor Again

Governor Charlie Crist joined other celebrities and leaders for the 2009 world-wide literacy event featuring “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. I was very honored to be asked to photograph the event, here are few images.

This event took place at Vista Lakes Elementary School on October 8, 2009. The last image in this set is of Ronald Blocker, Superintendent of the Orange County Schools speaking with Florida’s First Lady, Carole Crist.

OYP September Social

oyp_sept_social-6
Well  it took me a little longer to get the OYP pictures up than I expected, mainly due to a hard drive failure which resulted in the corruption of many files on my hard drive, including, these photo’s.   So, I had to restore a ton of images from my backup server and then recreate some of my work.   This is my first hard drive failure, EVER, so I guess it was a matter of time, I’m glad to see my backup strategy came through with flying colors.

I have posted the pictures to the Orlando Young Professional (OYP) September Social to the group’s facebook page [Link]

The event was held at The Orlando Underground on September 16 [Link].

I hope you enjoy the pictures and I’ll talk to you soon.

Photographing the Governor

On Friday, August 14, the Governor of Florida, Charlie Crist came to Orlando to discuss the Swine Flu and what the State of Florida and the School Boards are doing to help prevent the spread of the virus.  He also discussed what children and parents can do to protect themselves.

Like most government agencies, the State of Florida is looking for every possible way to save money, so the Governor is not traveling with the State Photographer who would normally photograph the Governor’s activities for the State Archives.  So with the need to still document the Governor’s activities, the Governor’s office asked me to cover the event in Orlando.  Here are a few pictures from that event.

The press conference was held at McCoy Elementary School and the Governor was introduced by the School’s principal, Ruth Ortega.

Also in attendance and speaking at the Press Conference was Orange County Schools Superintendent, Ronald Blocker.

crist_orlando_-7228-2After the press conference, the Governor was rushed by the media and reporters were asking him questions regarding who he will appoint to the US Senate seat and questioning if the Governor would resign and then ask the Lt. Governor to appoint him to the Senate.  The answer to the last questions was a firm, “no.”

After the event, my family and I were able to spend about 3 minutes in the back room with the Governor, before he left for Tampa.  It was a fantastic opportunity and an honor to help the State of Florida record the event.  The next stop for the pictures, the State Archives and some of the pictures will be printed and autographed by the Governor.  These autographed pictures will be sent to the dignitaries in attendance that day.

Fireworks at the Fountain

Over the last two day’s I’ve shared images from the 4th of July events where Catina Mack [Link] performed the National Anthem, today’s images are from her performance at the City of Orlando’s Fireworks at the Fountain.

After leaving the Star Spangled Sanford, we headed to downtown Orlando where she was scheduled to perform accompanied by the Orlando Concert Band.

Prior to her performance, we took some promotional pictures for her to use.

Star Spangled Sanford

Here are some more images of the 4th of July events where Catina Mack [Link] performed.  Her first event on the 4th was at Star Spangled Sanford on the Riverwalk at Fort Mellon Park.

Magic 107.7fm was broadcasting live from the park and Catina was interviewed by Dave and Leslye.  This picture shows Catina live on the air during the broadcast.

July 4th with a National Anthem Singer

If you’re a National Anthem Singer, Independence Day is a very busy holiday and for Catina Mack, a Sanford based performer, this year was no exception.  This year Catina performed at three Independence Day celebrations in the Orlando area and I was selected to document her performances at these events.

On July 3rd, she performed at Red, Hot and Boom [Link], which was sponsored by XL 106.7 and held at Crane’s Roost Lake Park in Uptown Altamonte.  Catina kicked of this event and was followed on stage by Evan Taubenfeld who is best known for being the lead guitarist for singer Avril Lavigne.

On July 4th, she had two performances, the first was at Star Spangled Sanford, which was produced by the City of Sanford and held at Ft. Mellon Park.  Prior to her performance she was interviewed on the radion by Magic 107.7 FM’s Dave and Leslye.

After her performance in Sanford, we made a dash to downtown Orlando for her performance at the City of Orlando’s Fireworks at the Fountain, which took place at Lake Eola.  This performance was broadcast live on Orlando’s WFTV Channel 9 and she was accompanied by the Orlando Concert Band.

Catina did a fantastic job at all three events, be sure to visit her website [Link] and you can watch her performances on YouTube [Link].

I will post images over the next few days, here are some pictures from the Red, Hot and Boom event that was held on July 3rd, 2009.

This picture was taken on the boat that took us to the back of the stage at Crane’s Roost Lake.
